In this study, we studied design choices for an ion trap quantum computer based on the Quantum Charge Coupled Device (QCCD) architecture. We considered different trap sizes, chip geometries, and gate implementations. What we find is that optimal choices vary significantly based on the connectivity of the algorithm being implemented, while some microarchitectural choices are always optimal, such as using gate based swaps over physical ion swapping.
